Revolvers hold 5 to 8 rounds in a rotating cylinder, have fewer moving parts, and almost never malfunction. Most first-time buyers choose a semi-automatic, but revolvers remain excellent options for simplicity and reliability.
Choosing Your First Caliber
For most first-time buyers, 9mm is the right answer. Here’s why:
- 9mm: Low recoil, affordable ammo, excellent self-defense loads, and more capacity per magazine than larger calibers. The FBI and most police departments use it.
- .380 ACP: Even lighter recoil and smaller guns, but less stopping power and pricier ammo per round.

- Magazine capacity: More rounds gives you more margin in a defensive situation.
How to Buy a Handgun Legally
Every retail firearm purchase in the United States requires a background check through the NICS system. You fill out ATF Form 4473 at the point of sale, and the dealer runs the check — usually approved in minutes. When buying online, the firearm ships to a local FFL dealer near you, where you complete the same paperwork and pick it up in person.
