Rule 1: Treat Every Firearm as if It Is Loaded
Always. Without exception. Even if you personally unloaded it thirty seconds ago. The moment you assume a gun is unloaded, you lower your guard. Every negligent discharge in history was fired from a gun someone believed was unloaded.
Rule 2: Never Point a Firearm at Anything You Are Not Willing to Destroy
The muzzle controls where a bullet will go if the trigger is pulled. Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction at all times — downrange at the range, toward the ground in the field, toward the floor in the home.
Rule 3: Keep Your Finger Off the Trigger Until Your Sights Are on Target
The trigger finger lives along the frame, above the trigger guard, until the moment you make the conscious decision to fire. This rule prevents the most common type of accidental discharge — the flinch or startle response that curls a finger already on the trigger.
Rule 4: Know Your Target and What Is Beyond It
Bullets don’t stop at their target. They pass through, ricochet, and continue traveling. Before any shot, identify your target with certainty and identify what is beyond it. In a home defense scenario, know where family members are before engaging a threat.

Rule 5: Verify the Chamber Yourself
When anyone hands you a firearm — friend, instructor, gunsmith, or dealer — open it, look into the chamber, and verify it yourself. Do this even if the other person just did it in front of you. Make it a reflex.
Rule 6: Store Firearms Securely
Firearms must be stored in a way that prevents access by unauthorized users — children, prohibited persons, and anyone in a mental health crisis. A quality gun safe prevents tragedy and is an essential part of responsible ownership.
Rule 7: Use Only the Correct Ammunition
The correct caliber is stamped on your barrel. Never substitute a different caliber — the wrong ammunition can cause a catastrophic firearm failure. Inspect every round before loading and dispose of damaged or corroded cartridges.

A poorly maintained firearm is unreliable and potentially dangerous. Clean and inspect your guns regularly. If something looks wrong, have a qualified gunsmith evaluate it before firing.
Rule 9: Never Handle Firearms Under the Influence
Alcohol and any substance that impairs judgment — including certain prescription medications — must never be combined with firearm handling. There are no exceptions.
